Research Proposal (an example)
Research Proposal
Research is an effort to study or investigate something interesting in order to discover the new information or findings based on the scientific methodology. In composing a research proposal, we should underline the following parts to be included in the research proposal (as comparison, please find):
Research Topic
Background
Rationale or Significance
The objectives
Theoretical Background
Research Methodology
Time Schedule
The guidelines from sponsor/research funding

Poverty in the Developing World.
The eight goals of the Millennium Development Goals were accepted by countries in the world and will be achieved in 2015. |
1. Research Topic
Research topic is the main aspect of the research proposal. It reperesent on what we are going to do. The main idea of research topic usually comes as a question. This is the easiest way when we want to formulate the resaerch topic. We can construct the research topic through some key words and then set up a question or statement.
2. Background
Any information related to the occurrence or existing idea that help us in understanding an event or object of study. It is useful guid for us to understand why an event or objcet occurs.
3. Rationale or Significance
How to write the significance of study. Please think of the significance of your research. Why do we do research on one object, as an example. Does it give impcats to the people, to the knowledge development or others? If you find the reason or the importance in doing research you can extract it as significance of study
4. Research Objectives
The research objectives refer to what you are going to achieve by doing research. What are your targets?
5. Theoretical Background
In doing research, we have to present the basic concept to justify the idea we have through (some) theory (ies) or other thoughts that were tested scientifially. Or the quoted ideas are widely accepted by many people or the experts. Those basic concepts can be used to draw the real phenomena. In practice, we can write this part by quoting some theory from books, scientific journals or even from the statements coming from the experts.
6. Research Methodology
The research methodology is the logical way of thinking in doing research based on the scientific concepts. It is related to the analytical tools that we are going to use in the research. It include the method of how we see and explain the objects/phenomena, how we analyze the results. In addition, it also covers the method to collect information/data and to process it.
7. Time Schedule
A research proposal should contain the time schedule. A time frame in doing resaerch wil guide us in accomplishing the research on time as we schedule. If possible, specify the type of works and the time to complete it. The good time schedule can be created if we consider our ability (the number and the quality of people doing research) and time constraint. When you start research and when you finish it at the alloted time should be striclty underlined. The time management is one key to give an outstanding final report.
8. The guidelines from the sponsor/research funding
What we have discussed above is about the standard of composing the research proposal. Other thing that we have to pay attention, especially if the research depends on the funding institutions, is the guidelines from the sponsor or insitutions which we want to submit the research proposal. The violation of the rules coming from sponsors tend to the unsuccessful research.
To make it simple, please feel free to have a look at the research proposal that was submitted to the the Asian Public Intellectuals (API)/the Nippon Foundation. This research proposal was submit in 2003. You will find here the adjusted research proposal to comply the guidelines from the API-Nippon Foundation.
